Marble is one of the most beautiful materials in the world. It’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Every year people choose marble for their kitchen countertops because of how it looks in design magazines and renovation shows. And every year some of those same people spend the next few years managing stains, etching, and a surface that looks noticeably different from the day it was installed.

Here’s what marble actually is. It’s a natural stone that is softer and more porous than granite or quartzite. It reacts to acids. Lemon juice, tomato sauce, vinegar, coffee — all of these etch the surface on contact, leaving dull marks that sealing cannot prevent. Sealing slows absorption of liquids but does nothing for etching, which is a chemical reaction not a stain.

In a bathroom with minimal daily use, marble is a reasonable choice. In a kitchen where you cook regularly, it requires a level of maintenance and attention that most households simply don’t sustain.

If what you love about marble is the look, quartzite gives you something very close with significantly better durability. It’s a natural stone, it has similar movement and veining, and it holds up to kitchen life in a way marble doesn’t.

If you still want marble after knowing all of this, that’s a completely valid choice. Just make it with open eyes.
