Why your sample doesn’t match the final countertop

By 05/08/2026No Comments

Natural stone is cut from a large slab. Your sample is a small piece from one corner. Your countertop comes from a completely different section. The veining, the color, the pattern – nothing repeats exactly.

Three things cause the biggest surprises: slab position, finish, and lighting. A sample with subtle veining can come from the calm part of a slab while the rest runs bold and dramatic. Polished and honed finishes on the same stone look like two different materials. And warm versus cool lighting changes everything.

Before you confirm your order, ask to see the full slab in person. At GMQ Tops we encourage every client to visit before fabrication starts. Ten minutes there eliminates every surprise on install day.
