An older kitchen doesn’t always need new cabinets

If your cabinet boxes are solid and the layout still works, replacing them may be unnecessary. A few targeted changes can make the kitchen feel significantly newer:

• Replace dated countertops with a lighter, cleaner stone
• Update old cabinet hardware
• Change warm or dim lighting to brighter, more neutral light
• Simplify a busy backsplash—or use the countertop material as a backsplash
• Replace an older sink and faucet while the new countertops are being installed

The biggest visual change often comes from the surfaces that cover the most space. That is why countertops can shift the whole look of a kitchen even when the cabinets stay exactly where they are.

Before planning a full remodel, find out what can be updated without starting from zero.
